Grindhouse and why it should be in HD

First of all if you didn't like this movie, don't reply, I don't want to start a discussion over whether the movie was good or not. Before I go into other things, I wanna say I'd like to see it released in its theatrical form, as one single movie (the menu could still let you watch just one) with trailers etc. Blu-Ray's capacity should make this no problem (I don't think it would have been on DVD really).

But anyways, I know it was shot to look like it was made with crappy equipment and being projected from crappy equipment from a worn to hell print of the movie. But thats why it needs HD. They did a great job of making it look worn and scratched, and the fine scratches, optical warps, pieces of dirt on the film, will be all the more impressive when they still don't look fake in HD. I saw it in the thater and know there is more detail to the wearing effects than the DVD portrays, and work went into creating that. I understand that Planet Terror's was done digitally, which makes since as it was shot digitally. But the effect artists that pulled off a digital effect as convincing as that should have it shown in its full glory. And then Death Proof was shot on 35mm which usually makes for a good HD transfer as well. Its wearing effects were done using non-digital methods. Basically, to represent analog optical distortions properly, you need to record them in high def. They can move in smaller than pixel-by-pixel increments therefore the higher the resolution, the more accurate you see them. When you think about it, the bulk of the effects in this movie are very fine lines, specs, and details... so lets see it in HD!

I didn't see these but would like to.

I think that all new release titles should be released on Blu-ray - I won't buy DVDs any more - it makes no sense to regardless of the movie content.

I was a bit dissapointed that the Grindhouse didn't come as a double-feature on DVD discs.

AFAIK - some of the trailers are missing, or perhaps more on Death Proof.

Its somewhat easy to see why it didn't do well in theaters... it was about 4hours long, and that eats into profits of the theater - limited showings, and people may not go for a snack, other than the credits for the 1st film.
The movies should have been made a bit shorter perhaps.

Anyways, Planet Terror was quite good. Some of the trailers are being MADE into actual movies, not just Machete! (These are direct to video). Death Proof is easily the worst movie that Quentin Tarantino ever made... yet the perhaps the one of the BEST car chase scene ever made.

His error - showing 2 sets of 3~5 women talking about er.. welll nothing... for 30+ minutes. When Stuntman Mike is actually in a scene - its VERY GOOD... not enough Stuntman Mike. :(

Dave: I still buy DVDs, though obviously the main reason is that no HD version is available and likely won't be soon. Having a lot of B movies on my favorites list means watch em on DVD or perhaps never. Slither on HD-DVD is probably the most aimed at B-movie buffs HD release so far. Yeah there's Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, but they had like 10 different DVD releases themselves, they have so many fans, that while they started as B movies, releasing them isn't the financial risk that most B-movies are.

However, aside from just "not available in HD", it wouldn't make much sense to put anything shot in 480i/p onto a Blu-Ray. Sure the overall bitrate will be better, maybe colors come through a tad better, but I couldn't see that much difference. I know most made for TV/video movies and many shows are shot on film first, but there are exceptions. But seeing as they were taped using a TV camera, not a film camera, I wouldn't see myself replacing my Three's Company or All in the Family sets with Blu-Rays. Get Smart, sure, but that was shot on film (the recent DVD transfers from the films are amazing). BTW i'm talking about the show not the crappy new movie (I know its not out yet but I've seen the script in bits and plot synopsis, they are about as dead on as Underdog was to the original).

Damn, I was hoping that Get Smart would be good.

I have been buying TV shows on DVD - that is about all really. Certainly I am saddened when new releases don't make it out on BD. Kinda diminishes the hope of seeing BD versions any time soon.

Still, not buying DVDs...! I will probably be torn at some point by a title I really want to own and no Blu-ray - but with so many alternative titles and also broadcast HD, so far I have not found myself needing to buy DVDs of movies for a long time.

Yeah I don't have any HD broadcast material, limited budget here. I have my PS3 and my Xbox 360 w/HD-DVD, all my high def material comes from those machines in the form of movies or games. Well the original Xbox has a few 720p and 1080i games but they are so few, I think there was only one game I played in higher than 480p and I don't remember what it was.

Dave (and anyone else that cares): Check out http://www.wouldyoubelieve.com/ for a description of the Get Smart movie and a look at the script. The guy goes over the main changes and also offers an on-set take from someone that doesn't care about the show and is judging it as a standalone movie. The trailer is good cause it has an homage to a scene from the show.

Basically almost all stars still living have refused cameos, the plot involves Max not being good enough to be an agent until all are kidnapped and killed, then he is promoted from accounting. 99 hates him and learns to love him over the movie (in the show, they clicked from episode 1). Seigfried is no longer German or funny and is now the head of Kaos. Oh yeah and Max is trying to save his hero, the best control agent, played by the Rock. Add to that the fact that the director called the show a silly comedy in serious need of an update, and made people sign to agree not to consult with Leonard Stern, Buck Henry, or Mel Brooks. Fan outcry changed this, and several weeks into filming they brought Stern, Henry, and Brooks on as consultants but apparently weren't listening to them, just boasting about having them on board in interviews. I could go on, but I'm the hardest core type of Get Smart fan with the full 138 episode set (best and biggest collection of extras I've EVER seen with a set). I'll also mention that not long into the script, Max is screaming about a rodent that crawled up his pants leg and hollering about his ass. Just not what I look for in Get Smart, shoulda made their own character. The casting is awesome, too bad the script isn't.

Sounds pretty sad...

And a lot like Johnny English if you saw that (with respect to how Max became an agent).

I tend to agree that if you want to 'improve' something that has a following, you need to tread carefully... or just call it something else.

The recent airing of Grindhouse on Starz HD was decent. At least it was in HD :)

As I understand it, Planet Terror on Blu includes both the original "dirty" print and a clean print without all the artificial flaws.

Death Proof does not.
