Hi I am just attempting to get a 9.1 system created. Can you tell me which Blu ray formats will enable Dolby to synthesize the surround rear signals.
My player and receiver are HDMI 1.3 capable. Similarly when when Dolby synthesize 7.1 from a 5.1 signal
Thanks

Most Blu-ray's have 5.1 audio though a few have 7.1.

I don't imagine that the codec would affect the ability of the amp to derive further channels.

Find a blu-ray movie that has dts-hd master. It is 7.1 audio channel
